Here is an excellent article by Steven M. Demorest, a Professor of Music Education at Northwestern University who does a lot of research on singing through the lifespan. He references the recent Oscar-winning short film "Sing", which shows exactly how young people learn to abandon their singing voices. I have found the same thing he finds - that many people who today say they 'can't sing' were told as children to mouth the words. This is so wounding to a young person who is just trying to find their own voice in the world! Many of the people who tell me these stories also say longingly that they wish they could sing, and yet don't believe they can. If we can only change that midset! Enjoy the article!
